WHO WE ARE
We are part of Failte Isteach ( which is part of Third Age), a community project which welcomes migrants offering them free English conversational classes. Most of the tutors are ‘ active retired’, interested in meeting people from different backgrounds and culture and helping them with language skills. We meet once a week for a two hour class, the Students mostly in small groups.
We try to make the classes fun, conversation- focused and student – centred. Twice a year we have a ‘cook and share’ party where we all enjoy delicious international food. We put flyers about our classes in schools, shops, libraries, community halls, hospitals in the Dun Laoghaire area.
We try to reach out to as many people as possible from diverse backgrounds who have recently come to Ireland. Their needs are varied : they may feel insecure in their level of English in their job, accessing services, supporting their children at school, understanding life in Ireland or trying to hold their own in a family who might be expecting slave- labour from the au pair system. All nationalities are welcome. Last year we had 98 students from Brazil, Spain, India, Russia, China, Japan, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Argentina, Egypt, France, Lithuania, Turkey, Colombia, Ecuador, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Saudi Arabia , Switzerland, Syria, Taiwan, Venezuela and Algeria.
English in the Library meets in the Lexicon on Monday evening, 17.45pm To 19.45pm.
