FREEDOM and CHOICE: Marking 30 years of Independent Living in Ireland.

Independent Living Movement Ireland is 30 years old. To mark the celebration, Join Independent Living Movement Ireland as they explore “What is Independent Living?” with a series of four online events over October.

Topics to be covered include

  • “The Importance of Understanding the Philosophy of Independent Living for Disabled People”,
  • Peer Mentoring Research,
  • The Importance of Assistive Technology and
  • “What is a Personal Assistant and How to Apply for one”.

Session 1 will take place on 5th October 2022 from 5 pm to 6 pm via Zoom. In this session, meet Dr Adolf Ratzka, the man who started Independent Living in Europe.

“Independent Living does not mean that we want to do everything by ourselves or that we do not need anybody or like to live in isolation. Independent Living means that we demand the same choices and control in our everyday lives that our non-disabled brothers and sisters, neighbours and friends take for granted. We want to grow up in our families, go to the neighbourhood school, use the same bus as our neighbours, work in jobs that are in line with our education and interests, and raise families of our own. We are profoundly ordinary people sharing the same need to feel included, recognised and loved.” – Dr Adolf Ratzka.
