Community Connection July 2024
  • Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg are hosting an event, ‘Bridging the Gap’, in the Dundrum Town Centre on Sunday 25 August. The aim of the event is to help students transitioning from Primary School to Secondary School. Cian Bermingham from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Comhairle na nÓg joins us to tell us more about the event.
  • National Heritage Week runs from 17-25 August this year with a number of events happening across the country. Heritage Week will be celebrated in Pearse Museum in St Enda’s Park, Rathfarnham. Joining us from Pearse Museum to discuss the event is Emile Crowther.
  • Dublin South FM has been awarded a new 10-year Broadcasting Licence by Coimisiún na Meán. Co Founder Mike Purcell, Vice Chairperson Bryan Fox and Station Manager Peter Rice join us to tell us more about the radio station and the granting of the new 10-year licence.
Community Connection June 2024

Helium Arts is a national children’s arts and health charity supporting the social and emotional needs of children facing lifelong physical health conditions through creative programmes. Joining us to discuss their new creative workshops and summer camps is CEO, Helene Hugal.

Dance Theatre of Ireland is a professional contemporary dance company based in Dun Laoghaire in a state-of-the-art Centre for Dance in Bloomfields. They provide activities to keep people mentally and physically fit at all ages and abilities. Co-Artistic Director, Loretta Yurick joins us to provide more details on the range of classes they currently offer.

The Irish Council for Civil Liberties present their new advocacy initiative, Rochtain, which will work to democratise and enhance the advocacy capacity of community and voluntary organisations through training, information seminars and 1-1 support. Joining us from the ICCL to discuss further is Democratic Freedoms Senior Policy Officer, Ronan Kennedy.

Community Connection May 2024
  • Focus on Funding, a series of training sessions organised by the DLR PPN, are being held between 10th and 13th June. DLR Public Participation Manager, Simone Sav joins us to provide further details on these sessions.
  • The Indian Film Festival of Ireland is an international event taking place every year in Ireland which curates Indian films from different regions of India. Founder and Director, Siraj Zaide joins us to tell us more about this year’s festival.
  • The Mill Theatre in Dundrum hosts a wide variety of world-class events all year round including theatre, comedy, literature and music. Shona Ashmore joins us to talk about her role as General Manager and provides details of their upcoming summer season.
  • Community Bike Rides was launched by Cycling Ireland in 2019 with the aim to get more people cycling. The programme is suitable for all types of bikes and caters for complete beginners to experienced cyclists who enjoy socialising. Joining us from Cycling Ireland to tell tell us more about the programme is Participation Manager, Paul Norton.

Joe Varley, President of the National Maritime Museum is here to tell us about the museums upcoming exhibition about MV Kerlouges rescue of 1941 that resulted in German sailors being interned in the Curragh.

Community Connection February 2024
  • Urban Junction is a youth and community project in Blackrock providing educational, social and Christian faith-based activities for children, young people and adults. They are hosting an open MIC Night for teens of 4th-6th year ages this March and Isaac Harris is here to tell us more.
  • Ballinteer Male Voice Choir have been in harmony 30 years this year.
    They perform at concerts and festivals throughout Ireland and abroad. They regularly host an International Male Voice Choir Festival featuring choirs from Europe. Chairman of the choir Finbarr Cuneen joins us to tell us more about this special group of singers.
  • Shankill & Ballybrack Community First Responders has been supporting the community since 2016 and are currently looking for more volunteers to join their team. Jonathan Lynch is the National Ambulance Service Community Engagement Officer and he joins us to tell us about this vital community service.
  • The dlr Festival of Inclusion is back this year from Thursday 16th – Sunday 26th May 2024 and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council is inviting all community and voluntary groups & organisations to organise events in their community. Siobhan Nic Gaoithin is here to tell us how to get involved.
Community Connection January 2024

Dublin South FM is the licensed community radio station for South Dublin. With a dedicated team of over 100 volunteers, their diverse programming emphasises community issues, health and well being, current affairs, foreign language and culture together with a wide array of specialist music programmes encompassing all genres. Recently appointed Chairperson, Aileen Eglington joins us to tell us more.

Founded in the early 1990s, Purple House Cancer Support provides support and professionally helps people affected by cancer. Their flagship fundraiser Purple Heart Day is happening in February. Conor O’Leary, the Director of Operations, joins us to tell us about the charity and the programmes that they offer.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Outreach Project celebrated 25years in action in December. It provides vital substance use rehabilitation supports to the community. Dean Ward is here to tell us about the work they do.

Community Connection December 2023

The Neurodiverse Teen Youth Club is a weekly club for 13-16 young people. The club is looking for neurodiverse young people who might be struggling to maintain close friendships or to have a group they can belong to. Jo Brennan joins us to tell us more.

 Killiney Historical Society (KHS) was established on 3rd October 2023 under the auspices of the Killiney Village Residents Association. The intention is to set up a more permanent arrangement to coordinate all aspects of historical relevance to the village and the wider area. Michael McShane provides more details.

 In our final interview of 2023, Simone Sav, Network Manager at DLR PPN, joins us to reflect on another challenging year for the PPN, the highs and lows and her thoughts for 2024.

Community Connection October 2023

The Anne Sullivan Foundation was setup in 1989 by a group of parents to campaign for and provide specialist supports for people who are deafblind in Ireland. Outreach Consultant, Sorcha Nallen joins us to discuss deafblindness and the services that the Anne Sullivan Foundation offers.

 Team Hope’s Christmas Shoebox Appeal is an annual campaign that delivers gifts straight into the hands of children affected by poverty. Following the launch of this year’s appeal on 18 September, Team Hope’s National Christmas Shoebox Appeal Manager, Jonathan Douglas joins us to tell us more.

Community Connection September 2023

The 14th Indian Film festival of Ireland will be held on 27th-29th October at Dublin’s newly opened UCD Cinema and will have an exciting programme of feature films, documentaries and short films running over three days. Festival Director, Siraj Zaide joins us to tell us more about this year’s festival.

 The first ever National Allotments and Community Gardens Week will be taking place from 14th – 21st October. Community Gardens Ireland Chairperson, Donal McCormack tells us of the benefits of community gardening for communities, individuals and the environment.

 As part of this year’s dlr Festival of Inclusion, the Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology will host the first Human Library in Dublin at their campus in Deans Grange on 3rd October. Head of Teaching and Learning, Rebecca Roper and Research Assistant, Louisa Keogh provide further details concerning the event.

  • DLR Festival of Inclusion – The aim of the annual dlr Festival of Inclusion is to highlight and celebrate social inclusion initiatives and to support and encourage all to actively participate and engage in the community. Ian Smalley from Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council tells us more about this year’s festival.
  • St Josephs’ AFC – Founded in 1953 by Fr. Frank McCabe and Brendon Harmon, St Joseph’s AFC is a schoolboy/girl football club based in Sallynoggin. General Manager of Operations, Kevin Fitzgerald from St Joseph’s AFC joins us to update us on their activities and to tell us more about their 70th anniversary celebrations in September.
  • India Fest – As part of the dlr Festival of Inclusion, takes place on Saturday 16 September in Kilbogget Park and is a day of celebration of the Indian people that have chosen to make Ireland their home. Thomas Joseph from Social Space Ireland and Santhosh Jose join us to discuss further.

– Women’s Voice DLR is a new non profit organisation that was born out of a course entitled Women and Leadership. Chairperson, Aurelia Ciblis tells us about the group and their next event at the multicultural women’s breakfast.
– East Coast Rowing Clubs undertook the challenge of rowing around Ireland in 24 hours on ergs in aid of Alice Hayes, a 9-year-old girl from Blackrock who was diagnosed with cancer. Gareth Witthington and Nicola Fitzgerald from the St. Michael’s RC discuss the fundraising initiative.

Allison speaks to Ciaran McKinney – Age & Opportunity and the release of their “Something Inside So Strong” video series that helps senior citizens build resilience in their mental health.

Southside Travellers Action Group, about the online services they have continued to provide to the traveller community in the Dun Laoighaire Rathdown area during the Covid 19 pandemic, and how their services have expanded to the UK & USA.
– Balinteer St John GAA Club, about their May fundraisers for Pieta House, Cystic Fibrosis Ireland and the club’s volunteer work serving the Balinteer community.
– Local Vocals Loughlinstown, about how they have operated during lockdown and the Dreamland Garden Festival.
– CYPS (Children & Young People’s Service), about the launch of LetsTalkDLR.ie, a new innovative mental health platform for young people in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown that helps to connect them with mental health services in their area

Community Connection – CoderDojo | BusConnects | St.Michael’s Rowing Club + MORE – 18/12/2019

Community Connection – A monthly series on Dublin South FM in collaboration with the DLR PPN Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Public Participation Network. The show aims to bring together people throughout the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council area to share their stories, discuss important issues and, most importantly, encourage the community to get involved.

This month we’ll be covering stories on:

💻 CoderDojo – a volunteer-run coding initiative that has been making some big waves in 2019 for the STEAM movement (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths).

🚌 BusConnects, and how it affects bus routes in the Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown Area.

🚣 St.Michael’s Rowing Club – Dún Laoghaire, it’s growing popularity and hopes for the future.

🌳 ShankillMatters – Shankill Tidy Towns and the Trees For All project – Tree Council of Ireland
