A Connected County: conversations on tackling loneliness in DLR

Loneliness can affect people across all age groups and backgrounds and can have a profound effect on mental and physical health and wellbeing.

As part of this year’s Festival of Inclusion, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Public Participation Network is holding a workshop about loneliness and social isolation. This workshop invites participants to explore the issue together and come up with ideas about how communities can help to tackle the problem.

Local people who are working to tackle loneliness and social isolation in DLR will be on hand share their insights on the issue and our guest speakers are Sarah Bowman and Dr. Darach O’Ciardha.

Sarah Bowman is Director of Strategic Engagement for the Trinity Centre for Ageing and Intellectual Disability, and Director of the Health Research Board-Irish Research Council IGNITE Programme at Trinity College Dublin. Sarah will give a background on what is known about the impacts of loneliness and social isolation.

Dr. Darach O’ Ciardha is a GP based in Tallaght who runs a Social Prescribing programme. Social prescribing links people with non-medical sources of support within the community to improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Darach will tell us about his Social Prescribing project and the importance of ‘social capital’
