Winter 2020 Training Schedule

We are delighted to present an exciting schedule of free training for January 2020.

1. Design for online and print: Practical tips for effective design

Date: Thursday January 16th 2020
Time: 6:30 pm – 8.30 pm
Venue: Dundrum Parish Centre, 14 Main St, Dundrum, Dublin 14, D14 Y5N7

Topics will include:

– Why strong images (graphics and photographs) are important.
– Fundamentals of graphic design – putting the foundations in place.
– Photography tips & tricks: how to take a good photo for your public communications tools (newsletters, websites, blog posts, etc.)
– How to create graphics to promote your business through print mediums and social media.
– Using Canva, stock photographs and other free online tools to enhance your visual outputs.
– How to use the graphics you create as part of your social media strategy.

Session Outcomes:

This will be a practical, hands-on session. Participants will gain the skills to create simple graphics – using free online tools – to promote their organisation.
They will learn how to tailor content to engage their specific target audience.
They will understand the content they create can be used in their communications and social media strategy.

Trainer:

This training will be delivered by Alice PR’s Digital Marketing Manager Elaine Parsons. Elaine provides PR support to clients including Right at Home, The University Guy, and Wild Code School, with a specific focus on digital marketing campaigns. She has extensive knowledge of tools and techniques for developing effective visual content.

2. Email Marketing: Building, engaging and keeping your audience

Date: Wednesday January 22nd 2020
Time: 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Venue: Blackrock Education Centre, Kill Avenue, Dun Laoghaire

Topics will include:

The importance of email as a digital marketing tool.
Creating an email newsletter for your business.
Using MailChimp to design a professional-looking newsletter template and manage your newsletter.
Building up your mailing list.
What to promote through your newsletter (special offers, discounts, seasonal events, etc.)
Data protection issues in relation to email marketing, including the implications of the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

Session Outcomes:
This will be a practical, interactive session. Participants will learn how to use MailChimp to develop professional-looking email newsletters and manage their mailing databases.
They will increase their understanding of their data protection obligations.

Trainer:

This training will be delivered by Emma Walsh, from Alice PR & Events. In her role as Account Executive, Emma plans and delivers strategic email marketing campaigns for a range of clients from community and charity sectors. In her previous role in communications for a national UK charity, Emma coordinated email marketing as part of UK-wide fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness campaigns.

3. Mobile Phone Video Training (two options for attending)

Date: Thursday 23rd January 2020
Time: 9.30am – 1:00pm
Venue: Mounttown Community Centre, Fitzgerald Park, Monkstown, Dublin

Venue: Ballaly Family Resource Centre, The Scout’s Den, Wedgewood, Blackthorn, Dublin 16

Topics will include:

– How to structure your video
– How to conduct a filmed interview
– The golden rules of video and still photography
– How to put movement into still images
– How to find and use free music and special effects
– How to edit everything together for professional results
– Developing your video communication strategy … and much more!

AUTUMN 2019 TRAINING INCLUDED

Writing Good Grant Applications – Thursday October 3rd 2019

Topics that will be covered include:

  • Criteria to complete a grant Application, Ground rules and writing process
  • Look at sample grant application forms and how to successfully complete them
  • How Grant Applications are assessed
  • How the Grant expenditure is measured – Outcomes
  • Common Mistakes in making Grant applications
  • Preparing a Budget Plan for a grant application
  • Characteristics of a Winning Grant Proposal
  • Science of Fundraising and why Funders Give and Stop Giving
  • Regulations

The seminar will be interactive with opportunities for attendees to ask individual questions

There are two sessions that interested participants can choose from.

Trainer 
Evelyn Fitzpatrick is an Accountant, holds a post graduate Diploma in Economics and a Masters in Management from DCU. In 2009 she set up her own Consultancy as a Financial Advisor and Trainer to the Charity sector. She was Director of Finance & Corporate Affairs of Focus Ireland Ltd for 8 years. Prior to that she was Country Finance Director and Company Secretary of Marks & Spencer Ireland for 10 years. She serves on the Finance and Governance Board committees of Mary Robinson Foundation for Climate Justice, Acquired Brain Injury Ltd, NABCO Cooperative Housing and North & East Housing Ltd. She is a past council member of Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Chair of their CPD Committee. She sits on the Audit Finance and Risk Board Committee of Pobal and the Professional Advisor Steering Group of The Community Foundation for Ireland.

Topics of the training include:

  • What to promote through your newsletter (special offers, discounts, seasonal events, etc.)

Trainer
This training will be delivered by Emily Brennan of Alice PR & Events. In her role as Training Manager, Emily plans and delivers training in communications skills to clients ranging from Local Enterprise Offices and SMEs to national charities and community and voluntary groups.

This training will run on Wednesday October 23rd from 10am-12pm in the Blackrock Education Centre, Kill Avenue, Dun Laoghaire.

The training is delivered in collaboration with Southside Partnership.

Graphic Design for Community Groups  – November 20th 2019

Topics will include

  • Why strong images (graphics and photographs) are important, and how to create them.

  • Editing photos and incorporating them into your public communications tools (newsletters, websites, blog posts, etc.)
  • How to create graphics to promote your business through social media.
  • Using Canva, stock photographs and other free online tools to enhance your visual outputs.
  • How to use the graphics you create as part of your social media strategy.

Session Outcomes

  • This will be a practical, hands-on session. Participants will gain the skills to create simple graphics – using free online tools – to promote their organisation.
  • They will understand the content they create can be used in their social media strategy.
  • They will be given tips on how to manage their social media profiles in the most efficient way, including through scheduling content and using online tools.

Trainer
This training will be delivered by Elaine Parsons of Alice PR & Events. Elaine provides PR support to clients including Right at Home, Dress for Success Dublin and Computerology, with a specific focus on digital marketing campaigns. She has extensive knowledge of tools and techniques for developing effective visual content.

This training will be running on Wednesday, November 20th 2019 from 10am-12pm at Blackrock Education Centre, Kill Avenue, Dun Laoghaire.

Committee Skills Training  – Tuesday November 26th or Wednesday November 27th 2019

This training will cover

  • Good Governance
  • Your Constitution
  • Individual and collective roles of committee members
  • Challenging behaviour at meetings
  • Keeping meetings focused and productive
  • Producing effective agendas
  • Producing accurate, brief and clear minutes
  • The physical environment

Trainer
This training will be delivered by Derek O’Reilly, Training Manager with the Carmichael Centre. Derek coordinates and delivers Carmichael Centre’s training and development programmes, customised training and consultancy services for boards and managers. Derek has many years’ experience of governance, management and quality assurance of community organisations in Ireland, Africa and Eastern Europe.

This training will be running on November 26th 2019 from 6.30pm-9.30pm at Samuel Beckett Civic Centre DLR Ballyogan and November 27th from 10am-1pm at Southside Travellers Action Group, 5/6 St. Kieran’s Enterprise centre, Furze road, Sandyford Industrial Estate.

Good Governance – Free Training from DLR Volunteer Centre

Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Volunteer Centre in partnership with Carmichael Centre and sponsored by Dún Laoghaire Rathdown Public Participation Network and Airfield are running three free sessions on governance for local groups. All events will be held in The Hive building, in Airfield, Dundrum.

What’s involved?

The webinars are an hour long, delivered via video link by the Carmichael Centre. This will be followed by a short round table governance discussion over refreshments, facilitated by the local Volunteer Centre (VC).

The webinar topics will cover the six principles of the new Charities Regulator Governance Code, which all charities are expected to adopt from 2020. These sessions are open to all involved in running charitable organisations and will be of particular interest to trustees and managers of community and voluntary organisations.

The Three Sessions

1. Good Governance: Advancing your charitable purpose and behaving with integrity (Principle 1 & 2), Wed 11th Sept 1:45 – 3:30pm

2. Good Governance: Leading People and Exercising Control (Principle 3 & 4), Wed 9th Oct, 1:45 – 3:30pm.

3. Good Governance: Working effectively, and being accountable and transparent, (Principle 5 & 6) Wed 13th Nov, 1:45 – 3:30pm.
